Transportable Buildings Canberra ACT: Steel Modules for Builders 2026

Canberra builders, developers and government agencies use transportable buildings for school and community rooms, staff offices, amenity blocks and housing. The ACT is a small jurisdiction with its own building rules, surrounded by New South Wales. A building that suits a Gungahlin school yard may need a different approval if the same job lands in Queanbeyan. This page explains what EcoPrestige supplies in the ACT, and how approvals work.

Why transportable buildings fit the ACT

Public building work in the ACT is steady. Region Canberra reported on 5 Jun 2026 that the 2026-27 ACT Budget funds 450 public homes. Programmes like this pull on the same builders and trades as schools, clinics and offices. A transportable steel module moves much of the build into a factory, leaving the local crew with footings, services and connections.

Many ACT sites are also busy and occupied. School grounds, hospital campuses and government precincts cannot shut down for months of framing. A module that arrives finished and is lifted into place keeps disruption short.

What EcoPrestige supplies

EcoPrestige supplies engineered structural steel volumetric modules, built and inspected in an offsite factory. Canberra uses include:

  • Offices, meeting rooms and staff buildings for agencies and campuses.
  • Amenity, change room and toilet blocks for sport grounds and depots.
  • Learning, consulting and community rooms.
  • Housing, from single dwellings to grouped units, delivered through a builder.
  • Larger buildings made from several modules, joined side by side or stacked.

Each module has a structural steel frame fabricated in the offsite factory and inspected there by the project engineer.

What does not fit

We do not hire short-term portable cabins. A building needed for a few weeks is better hired. A tight infill block with no crane access, or a building with large open spans and few walls, may suit a site-built frame better. Canberra winters also need the right insulation, glazing and heating set early, so the energy assessment is done before the modules are fixed. EcoPrestige is not a builder.

The approval path in the ACT

EcoPrestige coordinates the module design with your consultants; permit drawings are issued by the registered or licensed practitioner the state requires. In the ACT, structural design is by a registered professional engineer under the Professional Engineers Act 2023. Energy assessment is by a licensed building assessor. A licensed building surveyor certifies. Building design is not licensed in the ACT. Confirm with your building surveyor or certifier.

The class follows the use. Offices are typically Class 5, staff accommodation typically Class 1b or 3, and homes typically Class 1a, each confirmed by your building surveyor. Permanent transportable buildings need approval like any other building. If the site is across the border, the approval path depends on which side of the border the site is, and our transportable buildings NSW page covers the New South Wales side.

The programme

Site work, footings and service connections go ahead while the modules are built and inspected in the factory. Factory and site work run in parallel, so time on site is shorter. On a school or campus, the lift can be planned for a holiday or a weekend, with the builder finishing connections once the modules are set.

What to send us

  • 1. Site address and block, with a site plan if you have one.
  • 2. The use, floor area and number of people in the building.
  • 3. Whether the building is permanent or relocatable.
  • 4. Any engineer, energy assessor or surveyor already engaged.
  • 5. Access for a truck and crane, including overhead lines and trees.
  • 6. Your target date for occupation.

FAQ: transportable buildings in Canberra and the ACT

Is a transportable building in the ACT treated as a permanent building?
It depends on the footings and the approvals. A building set on permanent footings needs approval like any other building. A licensed building surveyor in the ACT decides what applies.

Who signs off a transportable building in Canberra?
A licensed building surveyor certifies. Structure is by a registered professional engineer under the Professional Engineers Act 2023, and energy is assessed by a licensed building assessor. Confirm with your building surveyor or certifier.

What if the site is in Queanbeyan, not the ACT?
Then New South Wales rules apply and a registered certifier handles the approval. The approval path depends on which side of the border the site is.

Does EcoPrestige build on site?
No. EcoPrestige supplies the modules. Your builder carries the head contract and handles footings, the crane lift and connections.

How is the price set?
A supply price is quoted for your site once we know the use, the size, the finishes and the access.
