Transportable Buildings Tasmania: Modular Supply for Builders 2026

Tasmanian builders, councils and operators often reach for a transportable building when local trades are booked out, the site is remote or the job has to be finished between seasons. The question is what kind of transportable building. A light portable cabin, a relocatable unit and a permanent steel framed module each sit in a different approval box in Tasmania. This page explains where EcoPrestige fits, and where it does not.

Why transportable buildings fit Tasmania

The Premier of Tasmania reported on 17 Aug 2026 that ModHomes has delivered more than 280 homes, with 271 more in the pipeline. That is a clear sign the state has accepted factory-built work as part of normal supply. On 28 Aug 2026 Tasmania also welcomed a national Kit of Parts agreement for public specifications and standard components (Premier of Tasmania). Standard parts make it easier for builders and surveyors to deal with buildings made offsite.

For a builder in the north west, the east coast or the Huon, the appeal is practical. The building arrives finished, and the local crew spend their time on footings, services and the connection, not on framing in the weather.

What EcoPrestige supplies

EcoPrestige supplies engineered structural steel volumetric modules, built and inspected in an offsite factory. Tasmanian uses include:

  • Staff and worker accommodation for tourism, farming and aquaculture sites.
  • Council depot offices, amenity blocks and community rooms.
  • Clinic, consulting and office buildings.
  • Holiday park cabins and lodges.
  • Permanent buildings made from several modules joined side by side or stacked.

The structural steel frame is fabricated in the offsite factory and inspected there by the project engineer, so the frame is checked before it leaves.

What does not fit

EcoPrestige does not offer design in Tasmania. We do not hire buildings, and we do not supply caravans or units registered as vehicles. A one-off home on a tight suburban block with no truck access is often better built on site. Sites with a long, steep or narrow access track need a route check before any module is priced, because the delivery plan sets what size the modules can be. EcoPrestige is not a builder: a Tasmanian builder carries the head contract and the site.

The approval path in Tasmania

A building designer licence is needed for design in Tasmania. EcoPrestige never takes a Tasmanian design engagement. Permit drawings are issued by a licensed Tasmanian building designer, who holds that engagement directly with the client or the builder. Structural design is by a licensed engineer, and a licensed building surveyor certifies. Confirm with your building surveyor or certifier.

The class depends on the use. Staff accommodation is typically Class 1b or 3, offices typically Class 5, and homes typically Class 1a, each confirmed by your building surveyor. Permanent transportable buildings need a building permit or approval like any other building. Read modular vs portable vs transportable buildings to see how each type is treated.

The programme

While the modules are built and inspected in the factory, your builder prepares the footings, services and access on site. Factory and site work run in parallel, so time on site is shorter. In Tasmania that often means the site work can be timed for the drier months, and the modules set and closed in quickly once they arrive.

What to send us

  • 1. Site address, with photos of the access road and the last stretch to the pad.
  • 2. The use, the number of occupants and the room mix.
  • 3. Whether the building is permanent or meant to move later.
  • 4. Your licensed building designer and engineer, if already engaged.
  • 5. Water, sewer and power available at the site.
  • 6. The date the building needs to be in use.

FAQ: transportable buildings in Tasmania

What does transportable mean in Tasmania?
In industry use, a transportable building is finished offsite and moved to site on a truck in one or more pieces. It is permanent or relocatable depending on its footings and approvals.

Does a transportable building need a building permit in Tasmania?
A permanent transportable building needs approval like any other building. A licensed building surveyor decides what applies to your site. Confirm with your building surveyor or certifier.

Does EcoPrestige design transportable buildings in Tasmania?
No. EcoPrestige does not offer design in Tasmania. Permit drawings are issued by a licensed Tasmanian building designer, and we coordinate the module with that designer and the engineer.

Can a transportable building be moved again later?
It can, if the footings and the approvals are set up for relocation from the start. A steel framed module is built to be lifted, but each move needs its own approval.

How is the price worked out?
A supply price is quoted for your site once we know the use, the module count, the finishes and the delivery route to the site.
