“Portable building” covers anything from a hired site hut to a multi-module classroom block. For a builder or project owner the useful question is not the label but whether the building can be moved, approved and used for the life you need.
As the manufacturer, EcoPrestige is responsible for every module: built and inspected in an offsite factory to Australian engineering and QA, then delivered to site.
Portable, transportable, relocatable and modular
- Portable: usually a single small unit on skids, often hired.
- Transportable: a complete building trucked to site in one or more pieces (see transportable buildings in Canberra).
- Relocatable: designed to be moved again after use (see temporary modular buildings).
- Modular: factory-built volumetric modules joined on site into a larger building.
Common uses
- Classrooms and early learning rooms (see portable or modular classrooms).
- Staff and worker accommodation in regional towns (see modular accommodation unit sizes).
- Site offices and amenities (see modular site offices).
- Cabins for caravan parks and tourism operators.
Why steel frames matter for portable buildings
Every lift and road trip loads the frame. A structural steel module keeps its shape through transport and crane set, which protects linings, wet areas and doors, and lets the building be moved again later.
Approvals and compliance
An occupied portable building normally needs a building permit or approval. The class (typically Class 5, 3, 1b or 9b, confirmed by your building surveyor), the site’s bushfire and wind ratings, and energy rules are assessed per site under NCC 2025, never assumed as standard.*
Getting a price
Supply price is quoted for your site. Send the location, use, floor area and timing, and we come back with a module layout and the documents your surveyor will need.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a portable and a modular building?
A portable building is usually one small unit, often hired. A modular building is made of factory-built modules joined on site, and can be as large and permanent as the project needs.
Do portable buildings need council or building approval?
An occupied portable building normally needs a building permit or approval, and some sites also need planning approval. Your building surveyor confirms the pathway.*
Can portable buildings be moved again?
Structural steel modules are made to be lifted and transported, so they can be relocated to another site after use.
Do you supply portable buildings outside Victoria?
Yes. Modules are supplied to builders and project owners across Australia; freight, crane and installation are quoted per project.
